An address is basically an account number used to to execute cryptocurrency transactions. Addresses are generated by shortening a user’s public key through a series of encryption processes (hashing). Unlike public keys, addresses are visible for all users to see.

At the beginning of Bitcoin, users could send payments to IP-addresses. However, this function was disabled due to security concerns.
