The Interplanetary File System (IPFS) is a project to build a peer-to-peer file system. Similar to the internet, the project aims to connect all devices to the same information. However, unlike the internet, data is shared across a distributed network. Due to the distributed network, access to files (like a website) will not be distributed if one server (like a website’s server) goes down.
IPFS was launched in February, 2015 and began spreading primarily by word of mouth.
