Immutability is the inability to edit over time. Blockchains become extremely difficult to change as they grow. A hacker would effectively need to update the entire chain to make a change.

Immutability is both a benefit and a challenge of blockchain technology. While it makes the data extremely reliable and limits fraud, it also makes it difficult to modify data for valid reasons or upgrade the underlying operating rules (protocols).
