Building off of the ERC-20 token standard, the ERC-223 token standard is a technical guideline for issuing tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. ERC-223 provides additions to the ERC-20 that reduce the potential for losing tokens.

Once created it is not possible to change a token from one standard to another. However, if you create a new token you can choose which standard to use to develop it.
