Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) is the ability of a peer to peer network to reach consensus even if some of the nodes fail.

BFT is based on a logical puzzle developed in the 1980s. This puzzle describes how a group of Byzantine generals, located in different positions around a city, may have challenges communicating and agreeing on if and when to attack.
