An Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) is a custom designed chip used for one particular purpose. For simple computing tasks, ASICs can be used as a cheaper and more efficient alternative to general computer processors (CPUs). Some ASICs are developed with the sole purpose of mining cryptocurrencies.

Typically ASIC miners can only mine one cryptocurrency (e.g. Bitcoin ASIC miners only mine Bitcoin).
